SEMI China Delegation Visits Japan

SEMI China Delegation Visits Japan

From Oct. 19-23 October, SEMI hosted a delegation that brought together several of the leading semiconductor equipment and materials companies from China with hosts from the leading companies in Japan.  The delegation was hosted at the Japanese companies’ facilities throughout Japan, and was attended by government officials and consortia from both regions, making for a valuable exchange of insights, opportunities, and connections.

With last year’s announcement of China’s major semiconductor initiative, the “National Guideline for Development of the IC Industry,” there are plenty of new opportunities in China.  The implications of the $19B+ fund for accelerating the China IC industry and $100B private equity instruments to invest in the next ten years are still being comprehended.  Recent announcements from China only amplify these opportunities – like introducing 14nm technology node manufacturing to SMIC with a Huawei, Qualcomm, and imec partnership, Intel’s planned expansion in Dalian to manufacture non-volatile memory, and the recent flurry of China semiconductor-related acquisitions and investments.

On the other hand, Japan remains a semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse with over 21% of global installed fab capacity (2015 data, including discrete, per SEMI Fab World Forecast).  Supporting the Japan and global market IC manufacturing markets, Japan has a deep and wide span of semiconductor and materials companies and remains the leading global supplier of semiconductor materials.

Therefore, the SEMI China delegation to Japan was well timed, enabling a much deeper understanding of the opportunities and potential for business development in both regions.  The China delegation were able to introduce their companies and products as well as describe opportunities within China and their business development aspirations in Japan.  The Japanese companies were able to present their companies and products, describe their experiences with subsidiaries and/or joint-ventures in China, and clarify understandings of the China investment plans.  There were many points of insight and inspiration and great C-level networking and relationship building.  Somehow, there was even time for site-seeing with a perfect early sunrise view of Mount Fuji, tours of historic temples, and delightful dinners in traditional Japanese restaurants.
